Why Curvature Matters for Motorcycle Riders
Every motorcyclist knows the feeling: you set out for a ride, follow a promising road on the map, and end up on a straight highway for 40 kilometers. The map showed a "curvy" line, but the reality was gentle bends at best. The problem is that traditional maps and navigation apps treat all roads the same. They optimize for speed and distance, not for the experience of the ride.
What is curvature grading?
Curvature grading is a systematic way to measure and classify how tight the turns on a road actually are. Instead of just knowing a road "has curves," you know exactly what kind of curves to expect. Kurvo grades every bend by the radius of its arc, computed from the real road geometry, and sorts it into seven classes: Grade 6 for gentle sweepers, down through tighter and tighter corners to Grade 1, and past that the hairpin.
The radius is what your bike feels. A Grade 6 sweeper arcs so wide you barely register it at speed. A Grade 1 corner turns on a radius of less than 50 meters, which means real braking and real lean. And a hairpin is tighter than 25 meters: the kind of corner you take in first or second gear, grinning through your helmet.
The rally connection
This system is not new. Rally co-drivers have used pace notes for decades to communicate upcoming road geometry to drivers at high speed. In a rally, the co-driver reads ahead from a notebook: "Left 3, 200 meters, Right 5, tightens to 3, Hairpin left." These notes give the driver confidence to push through sections they have never driven before.

Most riders have a preferred intensity level. Some love flowing curves where you can hold a rhythm for kilometers. Others live for the tight, technical corners of a proper back road. And some days, you just want to get from A to B without the adrenaline.

Kurvo offers three route tiers: Fast (the direct option), Curvy (optimized for winding roads while keeping the detour reasonable), and OMG! (maximum curvature, every tight corner the algorithm can find). All three are drawn on the map at once, each in its own color, so you can see exactly what you are trading before you choose. The color-coded map
As you preview and ride a route in Kurvo, every curve is shaded by its grade. Green for gentle, lime and amber for moderate, orange and red for tight, and purple for hairpins.
